Dr. Ip came to Doheny Eye Institute in 2016 from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health with two missions—to advance local and international eye health through clinical research and, as the new medical director of the Doheny Image Reading Center (DIRC), to expand DIRC’s research enterprise. Dr. Ip’s responsibility at DIRC is to steer its scientific mission, develop collaborations, and assure scientific validity and accuracy on all projects. He is a member of Doheny’s outstanding retina team and believes deeply in the importance of patient education to help achieve the best possible outcomes. He is a principal investigator or co-principal investigator on several multi-million dollar national research enterprises where he and colleagues work to better define therapies that will improve vision in patients with diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, retinal vein occlusion, and other diseases. When Dr. Ip is not busy caring for patients, educating patients and colleagues, and conducting research, and directing DIRC, he enjoys playing ice hockey and golf and mountain biking.
